About Rie

A wellness author, matcha culinary specialist,
and certified Japanese tea advisor based in Japan.

Focused on exploring how Japanese tea culture—
including matcha, Zen, and the Samurai spirit—
can support calm focus and modern, mindful living.

Mission Statement

My mission is to reimagine Japan’s traditional spiritual culture—
meditation, matcha, Zen, and the Samurai spirit—
not as something old-fashioned or rigid,
but as bright, gentle, and stylish modern wellness
that supports mind, body, and everyday happiness.

Just as yoga evolved from a strict spiritual discipline
into a global lifestyle practice,
I translate Japanese wisdom into something accessible, beautiful,
and naturally woven into everyday life.

Through a bowl of matcha, mindful breath,
and simple repeated movements,
I share a way of being present—
one that allows people to reconnect with themselves
without effort, pressure, or perfection.

From Yokohama to Canada

Born and raised in Yokohama, one of Japan’s most international port cities, I grew up surrounded by global influences.
This environment naturally sparked my curiosity about life beyond Japan.

In high school, I moved to Canada to study abroad, where I completed my senior year and later graduated from a Canadian university. Living overseas helped me see Japanese culture from a new perspective—and appreciate how deeply food, ritual, and mindfulness resonate across cultures.

How I Fell in Love with Japanese Food

Ironically, I couldn’t eat raw fish when I was young.

My mother gently cooked sashimi-grade fish and transformed it into dishes I could enjoy. Through these experiences, I gradually learned to appreciate sushi and traditional Japanese flavors.

This became the foundation of my passion for Japanese food culture—especially for those who might consider themselves “raw-fish beginners.”

International Trade Show Experience

After returning to Japan, I worked at international trade shows as a promotional model and interpreter, introducing Japanese food and culture to visitors from around the world.

Later, I supported expatriates adjusting to life in Japan, often using local foods and culinary experiences as a bridge between cultures.

These experiences taught me how food and ritual can create connection beyond language.

A Tea Ceremony Dropout

Although I now write about matcha and Japanese tea, I often joke that I’m a “tea ceremony dropout.”

I practiced tea ceremony briefly as a child but found it difficult to understand at the time. Years later, through studying matcha, wellness, and mindfulness on my own, I rediscovered its deeper meaning.

What once felt rigid now feels alive—an embodied practice of presence.

Zen, Samurai, and Modern Wellness

Alongside matcha, I also write about Zen philosophy and Samurai culture—exploring historical figures, Japanese aesthetics, and the mindset behind discipline, calm focus, and right-brain awareness.

From the meditative act of preparing matcha to the grounded worldview of the Samurai, I explore how Japanese traditions can inspire a calm, meaningful, modern lifestyle.
